How can you tell if a lamp has a 3-way socket without a 3-way bulb?
Two ways, that I know of. First, look into the socket. A normal socket has only one contact, shaped like a ‘tongue’ in the center. Secondly a three way socket will have three contacts. Oh yeah, I just remembered another way. If you put a single bulb in a three way socket you’ll have to turn the switch more than once to turn the light on or off. I think that should cover it.
