Green Living
“Green living” has lately become very popular among not only hippies and environment-nerds, but the general population as well. If you haven’t taken the plunge into trying to live a more environmentally friendly life, you might be asking yourself;
“How will living more environmentally affect my life?”
It is a fantastic question, and we will discuss the impacts of a green lifestyle within this article.
First of all we should discuss the impact it will have economically on your lifestyle. The once-off, upfront costs of living a more environmentally friendly life can seem large; a typical solar power installation from a company providing the service can cost $2000 or more! Luckily, there are ways to bring down the overall costs.
Installing power-saving lightbulbs throughout your house is a fantastic way to become more environmentally aware while at the same time saving money (and the upfront costs are very low!)
Building your own solar and/or wind generators is less difficult than it sounds as there are well written and easy-to-follow guides on the internet ($200 or less per solar panel, ready for use!)
When buying appliances for your house, ensure they are power-efficient. Some countries use a star-system, with more stars meaning more efficient; if your appliances do not have this rating, ask a salesperson for assistance selecting the most efficient models.
Upfront costs aside, “living more greenly”will almost always decrease your costs of living, as you will either be generating your own electricity for use or using less in order to decrease carbon/waste emissions at the power-plant your electricity is generated from. This decrease in monthly costs means that almost regardless of how much you pay upfront, you will make your investment back, plus more, in the long run.
Outside of the directly economic benefits, you will find that living more environmentally takes stress off you each month, as the bills and monthly expenses worry you less, which is almost immeasurably beneficial. You will be able to rest-at-ease, knowing that you are doing your part towards reducing the pollution you put out into the world.
You will probably find that the further you go towards trying to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, the less helpless you will feel in a world today that has a habit of making you feel like you are to small to affect anything; you will realise that not only are your changes making a difference, but that you can try to help make larger differences in the world, either by rallying about issues you learn about or educating the friends and family around you about why they should change their lives and how to do it.
There is occasionally a negative stigma around the idea of living a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, however I hope you have taken away from this article that you don’t have to be a hippy to live a “greener lifestyle”and that making small changes can have a large impact.
